Looking to 2024 and Year-End Compliance Registration Considerations

December 20, 2023
50to1

If your organization is engaged in state-level lobbying, most lobbying registrations across the country expire at year’s end.  December 2023 and January 2024 are when most re-registrations for 2024 must be completed. It’s crucial to spend the time now to review the jurisdictions in which your organization is lobbying to ensure upcoming renewal deadlines are not missed, including at the local level, where over three dozen localities have upcoming expirations.

A couple of other lobbying compliance nuisances and processes that are important to be aware of:

  • Ten states operate on a biennial registration basis, meaning renewals will not be required this year.  If you are no longer lobbying in these states, you will still need to terminate your registration.  However, a few states with biennial registrations have localities that still require lobbying registration on an annual basis – New York City and Louisville are two examples.
  • A small handful of states – Delaware, Michigan, and Minnesota – will automatically renew your lobbying registration each year.  If your lobbying activity in any of these states is ending, you will need to terminate your registration manually or else you will be required to continue filing activity reports.
